Secrets to the Nikon AF System

This is over 450 pages of everything I know about the Nikon AF system. It’s far more than just a supplement to the instruction manual, this is a guide that will teach you, step by step, how to really use the system! Each page will instill advice and confidence so you’ll feel completely comfortable each time you adjust your AF settings in the field.

We’ll examine everything from the basics of autofocus to how the AF system actually works inside the camera. We’ll look at all the different AF area modes (like Dynamic, Group, 3D, etc), I’ll show you new ways to focus that you may never have been exposed to before, we’ll discuss how the Live View AF system works, we’ll go over every custom setting for autofocus – what to use and why, we’ll look at all the AF controls on your lenses, we’ll cover AF fine tuning, killer focusing tips and techniques, and the top ten reasons you aren’t getting sharp images! WHEW!

“The book has been a pleasure to write and although you and I may never have crossed paths, it was a privilege sharing this with you. I hope we can meet out there in the field one day.
Until then, wishing you the best!”

Silent Song
This is the voice of a marginal society that is constantly pushed aside by the greed of a civilization, and whose voices are unheard. They live in the trash left behind by the strong who always threaten the environment of the world. No matter how hard they scream and how loud they sing, they would never be heard. The only sound is that of damage that is growing into a bigger threat each day.

Big Sister
I took this picture when on a bike tour in the mountains together with some friends. It was a full day adventure through villages and the countryside. I always carry a camera when I go adventuring or walking and take pictures when looking at beautiful scenery or meeting interesting people.

The Court of Heaven: “A Galley’s Last Stand”
I had taken a two week touring vacation to the north of France in June 2008. We arrived at around midday to find this scene. The immediate possibilities were obvious but the conditions were poor; the tide was out with the boat beached upon uninteresting sand with harsh, unforgiving and unattractive light. Still it was a scene that excited us greatly, and we knew that there was potential here.

Freedom
This one was created as an entry to a challenge. The subject was “fences.” I scratched my head to find a creative way to feature fences. Fences can obviously engender a prison-like feeling, so the idea of freedom quickly appeared. From there, I sketched out several options, and I found this one to be pretty effective.

Painting of Nature
This image was taken in a place named Situ Gunung. In the Indonesian language, situ means lake and gunung means mountain.

Cars

Yes! This book is about High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography. And you are going to love the extraordinary results of HDR techniques. But keep in mind that photography is photography—no matter what you call your approach or delivery. That’s why this book begins with tips that will not only help your HDR techniques; they will improve all of your photography. So you will not find any HDR tech talk in this Preface. You’ll fnd it in the other chapters; but for now, let’s focus on the basics of photography. To illustrate my tips, I use some of my favorite pictures of vintage cars (and one truck) that I shot during my travels. You’ll learn how to create similar HDR images in this book, so stay with me here.
